The Real Disease of Alcoholism:

You Say Allergy? I Say Schmallergy!

And Who Knows? Maybe Even A Victim-Schmictim, Too!

Understanding Alcoholism: Yes, It IS a Real Disease

Many people hold misconceptions about alcoholism, viewing those affected as lazy, irresponsible, or deserving of their struggles. This perspective overlooks a critical truth: alcoholism is a profound, three-fold disease affecting the body, mind, and spirit. It's a true trifecta of hidden burdens. Once you understand its' complex grip, you begin to see that asking someone to "kick it cold turkey" on their own is like asking them to fight a battle with three opponents tied to their back. They are not merely making poor choices; they are victims of a powerful illness that demands understanding, not judgment.

Break Free of the Chains

When facing the overwhelming nature of alcoholism, it’s easy to feel stuck, alone, or burdened by blame. But imagine a peaceful forest clearing, where sunlight filters through the trees, offering comfort and release. Here, you'll discover that you are not alone, you are not completely to blame, and you are indeed a victim of a relentless disease, not a character flaw. Help is freely available if you are willing to commit and open your mind – perhaps first to the understanding found within the Brotherhood of AA, and then, if you choose, to a Higher Power. This, you will find, is the answer for many people. This openness is the seed from which true growth springs, allowing you to grow in ways you never dreamed possible.

Is my struggle truly a disease, or just a lack of willpower?

We all need to understand the most glaring facts about Alcoholism:

  1. Your struggle is indeed a disease. It's as real a disease as cancer, diabetes, heart issues, etc. We treat folks afflicted with unwanted conditions with compassion, empathy, love, tenderness. We don't yell at our family or friends getting chemo or insulin, do we? Do we blame them for being sick? Does anyone ever wake up and think, "Hey, cool! I get to be a dirty, old, nasty, stinking Alkie again today! Yessss!!! I get to be miserable all day and all night! I get to hate myself, and my family does, too! Awesome!" Really? The Medical and Psychology fields have come too far today for anyone who is willing to educate themselves on this phenomena to be able to ignore the Truth of Alcoholism. It IS a legIt disease, y'all, straight up, and as such, careful response and treatment is complex and varied. It takes TIME and it will NEVER happen overnight. But it CAN happen with positive perseverance, patience, and the understanding that setbacks WILL happen.
  2. Alcoholism is recognized as a chronic, progressive illness.

WAIT!! Did you get that???

Alcoholism is CHRONIC!

Alcoholism is PROGRESSIVE! AND

ALCOHOLISM ENDS IN DEATH!

Please think about for a moment. Excessive use of alcohol impacts your physical health, mental health, and emotional health (there goes that trifecta thing again! Hmmmm??? πŸ€” What does that make me also think of? 3...the Trinity? the Tribulation? Three strikes & yer out!? 😱). It goes far beyond "willpower," guys; it’s a deeply rooted condition that requires more than just a desire to stop. Alcoholism WILL--NOT might--lead to a hideous--NOT peaceful-- death.

I feel so much guilt and shame. Am I to blame for this?

You are not to blame for having a disease. While choices may have led you to certain situations, the disease itself is not your fault. Releasing the burden of blame is a crucial step towards healing and finding peace.

Everyone says I just need to 'try harder.' Is that true?

The idea of 'just trying harder' often ignores the biological and psychological aspects of addiction. It’s not about a lack of effort, but about needing the right tools, support, and understanding to navigate a deeply complex illness.

I feel completely alone in this battle. Is there anyone who truly understands?

You are far from alone. Millions have walked this path before you and found recovery. In the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, you'll find understanding hearts, shared experiences, and a community ready to embrace and support you.

What if I fail--again?

The journey to Recoveryland is a straight, smooth road perhaps on a map only. No scenery, no pretty little stops to rest at along the way--at least none that you can see beyond being as a mere symbol of "Paradise" (aka, Shiloh). Just plainly & simply, in black & white only: Point A, Start here. Point B, Stop here. Get out! Rest! Relax! Rebuild!

Naah.....life gets lifey, so breathe, take it easy and only one day at a a time. Most importantly, let go & let God, but keep on coming back! There may just be a flashlight or a lantern or two--swinging patiently, waiting silently in the Tuesday evening breeze--just for you.

What if I can't imagine a life without alcohol?

It’s natural to feel daunted by the prospect of change, especially when alcohol has been a central part of your life. However, countless individuals have discovered a richer, more fulfilling life in sobriety, filled with joy and purpose beyond what they ever imagined possible.

Is help really free, or will there be hidden costs?

True and effective help, particularly through programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, is absolutely free. Its only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. You don't need money; you need willingness and an open heart.

How can I open my mind to something like AA or a "Higher Power"?

Opening your mind means being willing to listen, to learn, and to consider new perspectives, even if they initially feel unfamiliar. It's about letting go of old beliefs that no longer serve you and embracing the possibility of new paths to peace and recovery, one day at a time.

Btw, in most present day AA grouos, God is all-conclusively referred to as "my Higher Power." Not that n this group, if that is what youare looking for. We will never apologize or downgrade God's Ultimate Reign over His Creation. Never. We will not thump our Bibles or shout in your ears. We respect your views and your relationship level with, or without Him. It is not our way or your. highway. We all travel this road in many ways, many routes, havng many influences and making multiple choices in life, along with our educated, or uneducated, opinions. We all got at least one. Only you can decide to first listen, then think.

Your call. Just don't disrespect our God! That's all, y'all. πŸ˜‡πŸ€—
